I've been in Venezuela for about a month now and I am starting to find my groove, at school with my students as well as at home in this beautiful city. Today I had a really great lab with my Grade 8 MYP Science students, we are learning about natural selection and evolution and one of my colleagues was kind enough to bring in her tortoise Regal for students to observe.
I firmly believe that students learn best by doing and today my students were able to examine Regal and then try to work backwards and determine what selection factors would have caused the Red-footed Tortoise to evolve as it has. They examined his carapace, his behaviour, how he moves and how he eats. Everyone really enjoyed the lab and students were able to better understand the mechanism of evolution by natural selection.
